Abstract
1503876 Fatty acid preparation LION FAT & OIL CO Ltd 5 July 1976 [7 July 1975] 27864/76 Heading C2C Higher fatty acids (21-41C) are prepared by reacting a straight- or branched-chain monounsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon (20-40C) with carbon monoxide and a glycol (2-6C) in the presence of a cobalt compound catalyst, and a base containing a pyridine ring as a promotor, followed by distilling and hydrolysing the resulting glycol ester. Dicobalt octacarbonyl or hydrocobalt tetracarbonyl or compounds forming these compounds may be used as catalyst. Examples describe the preparation of fatty acids from tetracosene-1 and ethylene glycol, a mixture of olefines with an even number of carbon atoms (20-32) and 1,3-butanediol.
