Abstract
1503532 Ultrasonic scanning devices PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 Feb 1975 [1 March 1974] 8022/75 Heading G1G A cross-section of a body is scanned ultrasonically by use of a row LER of n rectilinear phased arrays of transmit/receive transducers. The arrays are arranged end-to-end and are actuated in turn as transmitters. Each array comprises m transducer elements, energized with appropriate phase delays for transmitting a pulsed beam fi of ultrasonic energy in a set of discrete angular directions sequentially. El-Ei-En represent the transmission points (considered to be the array centres). Following transmission of a pulse in a given direction, a group of m transducers are selected and operated as receivers for echoes incident normally on the array by combining their outputs in-phase. The group of m selected (adjacent) transducers is shifted, by appropriate signal gating, in steps of one transducer at a time at a rate dependent on the ultrasonic transmission direction to provide scanning of the receiving point Rx (the group centre) along the row LER away from the transmission point, thereby scanning the reflection points SS in depth (slant range). The combined output of the group of m receivers modulates the brightness of a CRT whose X and Y deflections are controlled in dependence on the ultrasonic beam direction and transmission point Ei so as to display a cross-section of the scanned body, e.g. for medical diagnosis. Apparatus for effecting the ultrasonic scanning, including a shift register and gating circuits, is described Fig. 2 (not shown).
