Abstract
1491527 Ultrasonic inspection PHILIPS ELECTRONIC AND ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 17 Feb 1975 [20 Feb 1974] 6543/73 Heading G1G A device for the ultrasonic examination of a cross-sectional plane P through an object comprises a line of transmit transducers each having a transmission direction in the plane P, and a plurality of pairs of receive transducers with the receive directions of the two transducers of a pair being situated in a plane P<SP>1</SP> which is perpendicular to both the line of transmit transducers and to the plane P. The transmit transducers are pulsed in turn and, following each transmission pulse, selected receiver pairs are operative in sequence to supply echo pulses to a unit which displays an image of the examined cross-section. In the Fig. 2 embodiment a flat mosaic of transmit transducers el - - - em and receive transducers r1A(1) - rrB(m) is used. In any column of the mosaic the two receive transducers equidistant from the line of transmit transducers form a pair (e.g. r2A(1) and r2B(1)) and are connected to a common terminal (t11 --- trm). Unit B provides pulses ae for controlling at DA the selection of transducers el - - - em in turn. The selected transducer is pulsed r times by generator G. The pulse interval is sufficient to allow spurious multiple echoes to die away. After each transmission pulse, multi-plexers MA1 --- MAm controlled by "row address" pulses al sample the echo signals and a unit DU passes the samples from a selected group of columns of receive transducers to the beam intensity control W of a CRT. The group typically comprises fifteen columns, extending to the seventh column either side of the active transmit transducer. The CRT X-scan and Y-scan are synchronized with the transmit transducer selection and pulsing and with the sampling of the echo signals. In a modification Fig. 3 (not shown) the multi-plexers are omitted, each column of receive transducers being used as a phased array with the signals from its transducer pairs being brought into phase and summed for application to unit DU. The line of transmit transducers need not be coplanar with the receive transducers.
