Abstract

150,328. Elektro-Osmose Akt.-Ges., (Graf Schwerin Ges.). Aug. 23, 1919, [Convention date]. Vaccines and immunizing serums.-Specific vaccines for the active immunization of men or animals are prepared by causing a continuous electric current to act on emulsions of dead bacteria so that the cell contents are liberated by osmotic action. The living bacteria are killed by the action of an electric current, as described in Specification 150,318, or otherwise and are then subjected to the action of a continuous current of medium strength and low voltage for several hours. In an example, a current of 12 amperes at 15 to 25 volts is employed in apparatus having an effective electrode surface of 400 sq. cms. The process causes the cell contents to issue into the surrounding medium, and in most cases causes granular disintegration of the cell walls. For immunization, the clear extract, or the cell walls or residues, or a mixture thereof, may be employed. The clear extract may be concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure. Specified vaccines are those obtained from the bacilli of swine erysipelas, chicken cholera, and tuberculosis. Osmotic treatment of bacteria by simple immersion in water or in very dilute or concentrated sult solutions is also referred to.
