Abstract
150,318. Elektro-Osmose Akt.-Ges., (Graf Schwerin Ges.). Aug. 19, 1019, [Convention date]. Immunizing and like serums; disinfecting. - Micro-organisms are killed by the action of a continuous current of low voltage and comparatively large current strength. Liquids to be treated receive an addition of common salt or other electrolyte and are placed in the centre compartment of a three-cell apparatus comprising a container divided longitudinally by diaphragms which carry on the sides remote from the centre compartment electrodes of net-work or lattice work. In apparatus having an effective area of 400 sq. cms. a current of 10-12 amperes at 20-30 volts is employed. Salt is added during the treatment to maintain the strength of the electrolyte, which may be kept in circulation. À by stirring or by the introduction of inert gas. Water is circulated through the electrode compartments to regulate the temperature and to remove electrolytic products. At the conclusion of the process surplus electrolyte may be removed electro-osmotically. Solids to be treated are saturated with an electrolyte and placed in the centre compartment or are suspended in the electrolyte. Data are given as to the sterilization of pure cultures of various organisms and the sterilization of diphtheria serum without destroying its antitoxin content.
