Abstract

1502979 Wood panels ELLINGSON TIMBER CO 23 Sept 1975 38967/75 Heading B5L [Also in Division C3] A method of joining together bodies of wooden material, e.g. wood veneer, to produce hardboard and plywood comprises coating said bodies with an organic polyisocyanate and with an aqueous formaldehyde solution, and bringing said bodies into pressure contact and maintaining said contact at an elevated temperature for a time sufficient to form a permanent bond between the bodies. The polyisocyanate is preferably a polyphenylpolyisocyanate, e.g. diphenylmethane - 4,4<SP>1</SP> - diisocyanate. The polyisocyanate and aqueous formaldehyde may be added together as components of an emulsion but are preferably added separately. The weight ratio of polyisocyanate to formaldehyde may be in the range 2 : 3 to 5 : 1 (solids basis), and the binder preferably constitutes 2-5% by weight of the cellulosic material. A veneer-faced particle board is produced by spraying aqueous formaldehyde solution and polymethylenepolyphenylisocyanate on to a mass of pine planar shavings, forming the coated particles into a mat on a fir veneer sheet which has been coated either with polymethylenepolyphenylisocyanate or a phenolformaldehyde resin, placing on top of this mat a second veneer sheet coated with either polymethylenepolyphenylisocyanate, and compressing the resulting sandwich at elevated temperature.
