Abstract

1502962 Applying heat shrinkable covers to vessels SUMITOMO BAKELITE CO Ltd 18 April 1975 [23 April 1974] 16113/75 Heading B8C To cover an open-topped vessel A with biaxially-oriented film B, a slightly oversize piece of film is pressed by a cooled plate 3 over the open top, the edges B<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 5) of the piece are bent over around the lip A<SP>1</SP> of the open top, and a stream of hot gas is directed radially inward at the edges B<SP>1</SP> to heat shrink them so that they seal against the lip A<SP>1</SP>. As shown in Figs. 2 and 5 the vessel A to be covered is placed on a preferably rotatable locator 2<SP>1</SP> on a pedestral 2 which is then raised until the lip A<SP>1</SP> contacts film B held in a holder 1. Subsequent operation of cylinder 8 lowers the cooled pressing plate 3 on to the centre of the film. A cutter 4 is also lowered to cut a piece of film and bending means 7, moving with the punch, deflects the edges B<SP>1</SP> of the piece downwards about the lip A<SP>1</SP> to be heat shrunk by hot air issuing from duct 6 and annular hole 5. The duct 6 may house a heater (12) for the air as in Fig. 8 (not shown), and the plate 3 may be recessed as in Fig. 10 (not shown) for use with vessels whose contents rise above the lip A<SP>1</SP>. As in Fig. 11, vessels may be fed on a conveyer E to be covered by film cut from a continuous length, and an additional heater F may be used to heat shrink the film.
