Abstract

1502707 Luminescent compositions DAI NIPPON TORYO CO Ltd 29 June 1976 [4 July 1975 (2)] 27085/76 Heading C4S [Also in Division H1] A fluorescent composition contains In 2 O 3 and Al phosphor (0#x#0À1) and optionally Zn 2 SiO 4 :Mn, the In 2 O 3 to phosphor being in the wt. ratio range of 1:9 to 9:1. The phosphor is green emitting under low velocity (<100 eV) electron incidence. Various forms and preparations of In 2 O 3 are detailed and the phosphor may be formed by mixing chemically precipitated ZnS and CdS, adding specified Cu and Al compounds, and firing at 900‹ to 1200‹ C. in a sulphuric atmosphere (e.g. hydrogen sulphide or sulphide). The activator concentration is preferably 10<SP>-5</SP> to 10<SP>-3</SP> grams/grm of the host. The In 2 O 3 and phosphor may be mechanically mixed. The In 2 O 3 is considered to enhance the electrical conductivity. Low velocity electron excited fluorescent display devices may be used as desk top calculators and measuring instruments. Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown) include anode plate (11), ceramic vase (13), two or more wire cathodes (14), and grid (15) for diverging low velocity electrons in a 10<SP>-5</SP> to 10<SP>-9</SP> torr vacuum. An anodic plate may be sedimentation coated, using an aqueous suspension containing 0À01 to 1% of water glass to improve adhesion, to 5 to 30 mg. of phosphor/cm.<SP>2</SP>. Cathode, anode and grid mesh details and dimensions are given. The anodic plate may be in the form of a character, number or pattern, the potential being selectively applied to the separated anodes while multicolour screens may include anodes in the form of dots or lines, respective portions including different phosphors. Detailed examples are included. Example 3 for instance utilizes 2 parts by wt. ZnS activated by Cu and Al in amount 10<SP>-4</SP> g./g. of host and one weight part of Zn 2 SiO 4 activated by Mn in amount 2Î10<SP>-2</SP> grm. atom/mole. Higher colour purity may be achieved by combining two or more compositions.
