Abstract

1502688 Structural joints SCANOVATOR AB 22 May 1975 [5 June 1974] 22234/75 Heading F2M [Also in Divisions E1 and B3] A tubular structural member 1 is formed by folding a single piece of sheet material, e.g. metal such as steel or aluminium, to form a rectangular or other polygonal tube in each face of which there is formed a groove or grooves 2, at least one of the grooves having sides 4 which slope outwardly from a flat bottom, and the free lateral edges of the sheet being joined to close the cross-section of the member. Preferably, the edges are joined at the bottom of a groove, either by interfolding of the edges (Fig. 2, not shown) or by welding or adhesives applied to overlapping edge portions of the sheet (Fig. 3, not shown). In a structure formed from a number of such members, the members are connected by connecting pieces or clamps of various forms as shown in the remaining Figures of the drawings. Fig. 5 shows clamping bars 5 of U-shape which co-operate with similar bars (5<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, not shown) to clamp simultaneously the grooves of two adjacent aligned members 1, 1<SP>1</SP>. The bars 5 (5<SP>1</SP>) are perforated on the lines 7 so that they can be drawn together by bolts passed through the perforations and through holes in the bases of the grooves, the sides 6 of each bar 5 diverging at an angle slightly greater than that between the sides 4 of the grooves, while the sides 6<SP>1</SP> of each of the other bars (5<SP>1</SP>) diverge at an angle slightly less than that between the sides 4. Fig. 5 also shows angled bars 9 for connecting member 1 to a transverse tubular member 1<SP>11</SP>. Fig. 7 shows a one-piece sheet -metal connecting piece providing pairs of arms 10, 10<SP>1</SP> each having groove formations to engage in the grooves of two mutually transverse tubular members 1, 1<SP>11</SP> in which they are secured by screws or rivets. Figs. 8-18 (not shown) disclose various shapes of single plates, e.g. flat, triangular or bent, which are similarly secured by screws or rivets passed through holes in grooves in the plates and engaging holes in the grooves 2 in adjacent tubular members to connect them. The connecting plates may be of wrap-around form (Figs. 19, 20, not shown) and may be formed in a continuous strip (Fig. 18, not shown). The connecting plates in Fig. 21 each have a number of grooves for engaging tubular members 40, 40<SP>1</SP> each of which has a plurality of grooves in at least one of its faces. Fig. 22 shows a method of forming a right-angle bend in a tubular member 1 without the use of a separate connecting piece, by the cutting-away of part of the tube to provide hinges 48, 49 and a flap portion 47 which, when the member 1 is folded about the hinges 48, 49 to place the end of section 50 of member 1 against side area 51 of section 52 of the member, can be secured to an adjacent part of the side area 51 (Figs. 23, 24, not shown).
