Abstract

1502565 Preparing polyhalogeno metal phthalocyanines IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 6 Jan 1977 [23 Feb 1976] 07035/76 Heading C4P Polyhalogeno metal phthalocyanines are prepared by adding chlorine and/or bromine to a metal phthalocyanine in titanium tetrachloride which is in contact with aluminium metal. The aluminium metal may be in sheet or rod form and may act as anode through which a direct current is passed in presence of an electrolyte, e.g. phosphorus oxychloride. The reaction takes place at 50-150‹ C. using 2-20 times by weight of titanium tetrachloride based on the weight of metal (e.g. Cu or Al) phthalocyanine. Sulphuryl chloride or thionyl chloride may also be present and the titanium tetrachloride may be recovered by distillation.
