Abstract

1501999 Laminates A FONTVIEILLE 2 May 1975 [2 May 1974] 18440/75 Heading B5N A thermally insulating panel comprises a thermally insulating core arranged between two facing layers, one of which is formed by a sheet of substantially rigid material covered on its outwards facing surface by a layer of plastics material, the other of which is formed by a sheet of corrugated metal, each of the corrugations of which is reinforced internally by a strip of material, the components being secured together adhesively. A process for the manufacture of a composite thermally insulating panel comprises adhesively securing together in a single pressing operation a first layer 15 of a thermosetting plastics material preferably reinforced by embedded glass wool or fibres, a sheet 6 of substantially rigid material, e.g. plywood, a layer 2 of thermally insulating material, e.g. polyurethane foam and a corrugated sheet 8 of metal, e.g. of aluminium, arranged in that order, thermosetting of the first layer taking place during the pressing. In a preferred embodiment, a strip 14 of a material resistant to compression, e.g. a plywood lath, is disposed within each of the corrugations of the metal sheet, inserts 37 being optionally and temporarily positioned on the outer surface and between the corrugations of the metal sheet to form a continuous surface for pressing. The panel may be formed using a press and mould, the mould consisting of a flat plate 18 bounded by a rim 19 and supported by a flat lower press plate 22 provided with heating elements 23. The upper press plate 24 provided with heating elements 25 is supported by at least one row of hydraulic jacks 26 to 30 and may have a profile complementary to that of the corrugated metal sheet. A pump 31 is connected to the space 32 between the press plates by bores 33 in the lower plate 22 to form a vacuum in the space between the plates enclosed by the lip 34 of the upper plate and a flexible joint around the periphery of the lower plate; alternatively, the lower plate may carry the lip and the upper plate the flexible joint. In operation of the press, pressure is applied only to a zone, the area of which is gradually increased by suitable operation of the jacks.
