Abstract

1501867 Drawing; making wires BICC Ltd 22 May 1975 [29 May 1974] 23862/74 Headings B3P and B3A Tin coated copper wires having a diameter of 1 mm. or less are made by applying a coating of tin or tin alloy to each of a plurality of copper or copper alloy wires having a diameter 2-20 times the required finished size and simultaneously drawing the coated wires through a respective series of dies using a multi-line wire drawing machine, the total output of which is at least 3 km./min. The speed of each wire through the machine, which may be of the type described in Specifications 1,403,790 or 1,305,032, does not exceed 700 m./min. or 1500 m./min. The drawing machine, the capstans of which are overdriven, may be operated in line with an electrolytic tin coating apparatus and may be followed by an annealer and insulator or a buncher for twisting the wires together.
