Abstract

1501652 Washing - machines ENGELHARDT & FORSTER 22 Jan 1975 27497/77 Divided out of 1501651 Heading D1A A continuous laundry washing machine comprises a horizontal, rotatable apertured drum 3 within a casing 1, both the interior of the drum and the gap between drum and casing being divided radially into chambers by partitions 9a, 9b etc. which project outwardly of the drum and make a fluid tight seal with the casing which is also preferably composed of segments 16a, b, c etc., the partitions 9 being formed with an aperture and the chamber within the drum, having conveyors 27a, b, c etc., so that batches of laundry may be advanced along the drum through different baths in the respective chambers. The drum is supported and driven (oscillated for washing and rotated to advance the laundry) by belts 13a to d etc., driven in turn by an electric motor 19 via a shaft 14. The belts also serve to make said fluid tight seal. The drum rests on the floor of the casing when not in use and is raised by pneumatically-operated jockeys 26 which tension the belts, the drum height being set automatically with height sensors, this system also compensating for changes in the loading of the drum. The chambers formed between the drum and casing are supplied independently with liquids by pipes 34 and a control box 36. The drum may comprise a soaking chamber(s), prewash chamber, washing chamber(s) at different temperatures if required, hot and cold rinse chambers. The conveyors comprise a portion 29 formed as a segment of a circle curved into a helical shape and triangular portions 31, 32 feeding a sectorshaped aperture 28 in the adjacent partition. The drum has an internal rib 33a, b, c etc. in each chamber.
