Abstract

1501102 Fuel cell catalysts SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 17 Feb 1975 [19 Feb 1974] 7429/74 Heading B1E [Also in Division H1] A fuel cell electrode catalyst composite is formed by (i) covering the surface of a catalyst metal which is a Gp. 8 transition metal with a layer of hydrogen substantially without absorption of hydrogen into the body of the metal, and (ii) whilst so covered, applying a co-catalyst component selected from Cu, Ag, Au, Zn, Cd, Hg, B, Al, In, T1, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb, P, As, Sb, Bi, S, Se, Te, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Re, Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, In, Pt, rare earths, Th or U and/or their oxides or hydroxides (the co-catalyst component being different from the catalyst metal) to form a discontinuous layer on the catalyst metal. The catalyst metal may be deposited on an electrically conductive substrate by electrodeposition or by impregnation followed by chemical or electrochemical reduction. The hydrogen layer may be obtained by electrochemical adsorption either in a separate stage from the co-catalyst component application or in the presence of the co-catalyst component or a precursor thereof. The co-catalyst compound may be partially reduced by reaction with the covering layer of hydrogen. The Examples relate to the treatment of Pt-metal catalysts with Sn, Ti, P, Ta, Re, Ru or Os.
