Abstract

1500911 Composition for disclosing dental plaque S L SELWYN 17 Jan 1975 [1 Feb 1974 24 Oct 1974] 04892/75 and 46130/74 Heading G1B Dental plaque on the teeth is disclosed by a process wherein there is taken into the mouth of the individual the dye amaranth, the dye being in the form of an aqueous solution as such, or applied immediately before use to a swab, or forming a component of an ingestible composition other than an aqueous solution from which composition the amaranth enters into solution on contact with saliva, the solution when in contact with the teeth staining any plaque on the teeth. The amaranth may be taken into the mouth in the form of a tablet, a pastil or in gel form In a preferred process, a solution containing amaranth 0.5 to 10% in water is dispensed under pressure to a point under the tongue. A mouthwash composition for use in the invention comprises amaranth, propylene glycol, peppermint oil, a mixture of the methyl, ethyl and propyl esters of para hydroxybenzoic acid, butyl hydroxybenzoate and water, and a gel composition is formed by adding to the mouthwash composition sodium carboxymethylcellulose or polyvinylpyrrolidone. A tablet for use in the invention comprises amaranth, peppermint oil, Syloid (T.T.M.), sodium saccharin, sodium bicarbonate, mannitol, calcium stearate.
