Abstract

1500882 Regulating IC engines; spray carburetters NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 17 May 1976 [16 May 1975] 20236/76 Headings F1B and F1H [Also in Divisions Bl F4 and G3] The combustion temperature in an exhaust gas purifying device 46 is maintained within a predetermined temperature range by means of an air/ fuel ratio control device 60 which comprises sensor 68 which generates a signal representative of the combustion temperature, a control circuit 70 in which the generated signal is compared with first and second reference signals representative of the minimum and maximum of the predetermined range and which generates a first error signal when the temperature is too low and a second error signal when the temperature is too high and means responsive to the first error signal to reduce the air/fuel ratio of mixture to be burned in the combustion chamber of an engine; and means responsive to the second error signal to increase the air/ fuel ratio of the mixture. Carburetter 20 has a main nozzle 28, an associated air bleed 32 and a supplementary air inlet 76 controlled by solenoid valve 80. Slow running part 36 has an air bleed 38 and supplementary air inlet 78 controlled by solenoid valve 82. When the temperature in chamber 46 is too low, both valves 80 and 82 close, to increase the amount of unburnt fuel which reaches chamber 46, and thereby increase the chamber temperature. Conversely, when the temperature in chamber 46 is too high, both the valves open. Exhaust gas recirculation. Conduit 50 conducts exhaust gas from pipe 42 to inlet passage 16 at a rate controlled by diaphragm-operated valve 54, the vacumn chamber of which is connected to inlet passage 16 downstream of throttle valve 21 so that exhaust gas recirculation increases with increases in inlet passage vacuum. Ignition timing control. Distributer unit 98 includes a first set of contact breaker points 96 which time the engine for normal running and a second set of points 108, electrically in parallel with the first set which provide for the spark to occur later than the first set. In series with second points 108 is switch 106 which is closed by control circuit 70 when chamber 46 is at too low a temperature, to retard the spark and thus increase the temperature of exhaust gases reaching chamber 46. Secondary air supply to afterburner. Enginedriven pump 64 feeds air to control valve 116, which directs air to pipe 44 upstream of chamber 46 when control circuit 70 produces the first error signal indicating that the temperature of chamber 46 is too low. When circuit 70 produces the second error signal, valve 116 is actuated to divert the pump output to duct 118 leading to air cleaner 18. Afterburner ignition device. A spark-plug 120 receives a high voltage from generator 122 when the first error signal is produced by circuit 70. Operation of the generator ceases when the second error signal is produced.
