Abstract

1500378 Metal cyanides, cyanates and thiocyanates F VON STUTTERHEIM 9 April 1975 [10 April 1974] 14609/75 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions B1 and C7] A process for dissolving a metal in a metal cyanamide, thiocyanate, cyanide or halide melt comprises contacting the said metal with the melt and adding to the melt either (a) a substance which decomposes in the melt in the presence of said metal; or (b) a mixture of substances which together contain nitrogen, carbon and, optionally, oxygen or sulphur and which together react in the melt in the presence of said metal; such that free CN, OCN or SCN radicals are liberated in the melt. Suitable substances for method (a) include HCN, cyanic acid, gaseous cyanogen, dicyanimide, cyanamide, cyanhalides and derivatives and polymers of these such as cyanuric acid, cyanuric halides, melamine and higher polymers of HCN; nitriles, oxamide; and ethylenediamine. Method (b) may be effected with methane or carbon monoxide and ammonia. The metals are dissolved as cyanides, cyanates or thiocyanates.
