Abstract

1500245 Leaching glass UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE and M TELKES 25 Aug 1976 35264/76 Heading C1M [Also in Division B1] A nucleating device for crystallizing from a melt comprises a material having a disordered lattice, e.g. soda-silica glass, having microcavities therein, and having crystals capable of acting as nuclei for the melt located in the cavities. The device may be made by leaching the material, e.g. in a boiling 10% Na 2 HPO 4 solution for ¢ hour to give microcavities of 5-1000 Š in the surface. The leached material may then be immersed in a melt of the desired material and then covered in a powder of the same material so that crystals are formed in the cavities. The device may be in the form of a float, e.g. 0À05 inch O.D. glass tube covered by glass fibre or glass cloth. The device may be used in a solar heat storage unit wherein the heat is released by crystallizing a molten liquid, e.g. CaCl 2 .6H 2 O, Na 2 O 3 .10H 2 O, Na 2 HPO 4 .12H 2 O, Ca- (NO 3 ) 2 .4H 2 O, Na 2 SO 4 .10H 2 O, or Na 2 S 2 O 3 .5H 2 O.
