Abstract
Supercooled fluids such as hypo may be packaged and used as sources of heat at a predetermined temperature, recrystallization being triggered when release of heat is desired. In order to render the supercooled hypo stable, it is heated sufficiently to ensure that minute crystals of all phases, especially the dihydrate are melted. The specific gravity and optionally the pH are then adjusted to 1.595 and 8-8.5 respectively, for example by adding water and an alkali, thereby to stabilize the fluid when it is supercooled below the melting point of hypo. The water also ensures recrystallization as the alpha -pentahydrate, thereby maximizing the release of heat.
