Sorting by weighing.-Articles such as glass rods or tubes which have been gauged as regards cross-sectional size are carried by conveyor arms to a weighing-position where the arm is acted upon by weighing mechanism which allows the arm to rock and reject the article if over prescribed weight. The sorting-machine is described as an attachment to a machine for drawing and cutting off glass tubes or rods, and its casing 8 is fixed to the end of this machine. The wheel 2, Fig. 1, feeds the rods from this machine into the trough 10 of a conveyor, and each rod is picked up at the ends by opposite carriers 19, Fig. 24, and is delivered according to " over " and " under " size at positions b, c, and according to weight at the positions d, e. Each carrier has a pin 22 which moves in an endless groove in the casing 8 the edge of which is cut away at d, e to allow the carriers to swing and deliver the rods in these positions. Two shafts 80, 81, Figs. 19 and 21, are supported at their ends upon knife edges in the frame and have pivoted levers 82 which swing horizontally. A pin 83 on the lever 82 is adapted to come into the path of a projection 84 on the back of the carrier 19. The shafts 80, 81 carrying the levers are weighted. A heavy rod tilts the lever and is discharged at d. Rods of correct weight are similarly discharged at e, and light rods are carried over the top and collected. The projections 84 are wedge-shaped tc allow the carrier to return easily. The lever 82 is swung against the influence of the spring 85 tc allow the carrier to pass, by means of a cam on the shaft 66 and a sliding rod 91. The guides at d, e are cut away to allow the carriers to tilt, but cut-away portions are closed during movement of the chains by lugs 107 on cam-operated slides. Specification 151,486 is referred to.
