Abstract

151,486. Marks, E. C. R., (Libbey Glass Co.). April 22, 1919. Sorting by weighing. - Glass rods, tubes, &c., which have been delivered from a drawing machine and have been automatically conveyed by carriers to diameter-gauging positions are then conveyed by the carriers to weighing positions, where the carriers coact with weighing mechanisms, so that the rods, if of sufficient weight to tilt the weighing-mechanisms, are discharged by the consequent tipping movements of the carriers. The carriers 19, Figs. 1 and 24, are mounted on parallel conveyer chains 13, and each rod a, delivered from the drawing-machine by a wheel 2, is picked up at the ends by a pair of carriers and delivered according to " over " and " under " diameter to positions b, c, and according to weight at the positions d, e. Each carrier has a pin 22 moving in an endless groove in the casing, which is cut away at d, e to allow the carriers to swing and deliver the rods in these positions. Two shafts 80, 81, Figs. 21 and 22, are supported at their ends upon knifeedges and carry pivoted levers 82, which swing horizontally. Pins 83 on the levers 82 normally lie in the path of the backs 84 of the carriers 19. The resistance to tilting of the levers 82 is adjusted by placing weights on pins 94 and screwing weights 96 on to levers carried by the shafts 80, 81. A heavy rod tilts the lever 82 at the position d and is discharged. Rods of correct weight are discharged at e and light rods are carried over the top and collected at 109. After tilting of the carriers 19, shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, the carriers are positively and automatically returned to horizontal position by means of slides which push the pins 22, Fig. 24, into their endless grooves and at the same time close the gaps in readiness for another movement of the conveyer chains. Prior to this movement the levers 82, Fig. 21, are rocked clear of the carriers 19 and are restored after the carriers have passed.
