1499829 Jet-forming; shearing; making radiator panels BRITISH LEYLAND UK Ltd 11 June 1975 [15 June 1974] 26636/74 Headings B3A B3Q and B3W Ductile sheet metal is shaped and formed with apertures against a die by at least one fluid jet The apertures may be formed by shearing against edges on the die, or lines of weakness may be provided before the sheet is formed against the die. A single jet of oil, steam or water containing a long-chain polymer additive may be used if the point and/or angle of impingement is varied. As applied to forming louvred radiator grills, Fig. 2 (not shown), against a rotary disc 5 by nozzles 11, copper strip 1 is impressed with lines of weakness between rollers 2, 3 upstream of the die. At the die the lines of weakness rupture over countersunk slots in the die and the louvres are formed as the metal shears on the louvre features of the die. Water passes into the drum-die and drains into a pump 10 for re-circulation. The edges of the strip are dimpled between rollers 6, 7.
