Abstract
1499728 Tube extruder UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 2 Aug 1976 [6 Aug 1975 12 Sept 1975] 32942/75 and 37674/75 Heading B5A [Also in Division B3] A method of making tube 45 by continuous extrusion comprises introducing non-molten material to be extruded, e.g. a rod of metal, or metal or ceramics powder, or thermoplastics granules, into a circumferential passageway 31 of progressively decreasing cross-section and formed between a first inner member 29, 30 and a second outer member 40, 42, and moving the first and second members relative to one another for causing the material to be drawn along the passageway by frictional drag and to be fed to and extruded through an annular extrusion path 39 adjacent to and in communication about its full circumference with the passageway 31. A stationary framework 21 journals a shaft 24 engageable by a prime mover (not shown), the shaft being formed with a locating flange 26 which tapers to a shoulder 29 and a mandrel 30 thereby providing the floor and one wall of the passageway 31. The other wall of the passageway is formed by a die ring 33 similarly journalled in the framework 21. The passageway is closed by a stationary shoe member 40, 42, which is provided with a single opening to the passageway 31 for feedstock F. Rotation of the shaft 24 draws the feedstock into the passageway and causes rotation of the die ring 33, which may alternatively also be driven. The die ring 33 is eccentric by an amount D to the shaft 24 to provide additional compression of the material as it passes through the extrusion path 39 to form tube 45 of wall thickness 46. In an alternative embodiment, two stationary shoe members (8), (9), Figs. 1, 2 (not shown), are provided permitting two sources of extrusion material (12) to be provided and the extrusion die ring (4) is concentric with the mandrel (3). More than two shoe members, each with its own feed inlet may be provided allowing for a high production rate of extruded tube. The feedstock F to be extruded may be a metal rod or a rod of compactable material in precompacted form such as a metal powder or granules of a thermoplastics or ceramics powder.
