Abstract

1499437 Scoring gum sheets PACKAGE MACHINERY CO 26 Feb 1975 [25 April 1974] 8019/75 Heading B5A [Also in Division B8] Sheets of gum 12 are fed along a first path 20 where they are scored along lines 25 parallel to the first path by a scoring device 24 and then along a second path 28, lying normal to the first and comprising two portions at different elevations, where the slabs 26 formed in the first scoring are separated by separating device 30 between the two portions of the second path, and are scored along lines 33 parallel to the second path by scoring device 32, the scored slabs 2611 then being loaded on to a conveyer travelling normally to the second path for transference to a wrapping machine 10. Preferably, all the operations on the second path are performed in timed relation with the wrapping machine and controlled by a single drive mechanism; similarly, supply of sheets to the first path and the operations thereon are synchronized by being controlled by a single drive mechanism, which is activated by a sensing means along the second path responsive to the movement of gum therealong. A conveyer 38, Fig. 1, moves a tray carrying sheets of gum from the bottom of a stack of trays 12 to an unloading station 16 where a sheet is lifted off by a vacuum transfer mechanism 40 and placed in the first position 18 where it is accurately located by pushers 45. The sheet passes through upper and lower scoring discs 50, which also trim the selvedge, to the second position 22 where it engages locating stops 56. A chain conveyer 58 carries the scored sheet to an elevating member 62 which accommodates one slab 26<SP>1</SP>. The member 62 is raised and severs the slab 26<SP>1</SP> from the remainder of the sheet 26 against a shearing edge 64. When the separated slab is level with the second portion of the second path 28 a pusher 70 feeds it to an alignment device 74 (Fig. 1) and through a second set of scoring discs 82. Deflectors 82 remove selvedge as the scored slab 26<SP>111</SP> is fed beneath hold-down fingers 86, 88 to another pusher 90 which feeds the slab on to a conveyer 92 leading to breaker wheels 37 for separating the scored slab 26<SP>11</SP> into gum sticks.
