Abstract

1499147 Disazo and trisazo dyestuffs IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 March 1976 [30 April 1975] 18012/75 Heading C4P The invention comprises azo dyestuffs which in the acid form have the formula in which Z is the residue of an aminonaphthol sulphonic acid capable of coupling with two moles of diazo components; A is an aromatic radical which contains at least one phosphonic acid group, and A 1 is an aromatic radical which is free from phosphonic acid groups and also from arylazo groups if ortho to the OH group of Z, and which contains a sulphonic or carboxylic acid group if ortho to the NH 2 group of Z. Preferred compounds (1) have the formula wherein one of X 1 and X 2 is H and the other is SO 3 H, and A is a sulphonated aryl radical, preferably of the formula C 2 + 4qH 3 + 2q - r(SO 3 H)r when q is 1 or 2 and r is an integer of from 1 to (q + 1). The compounds of Formula (1) may be prepared by coupling an aminonaphthol sulphonic acid which is capable of coupling twice, first under acid conditions with the diazonium salt from an aromatic amine which contains either a phosphonic acid, carboxylic acid or sulphonic acid group, and secondly at a higher pH with the diazonium salt from an aromatic amine which is free from arylazo groups, which contains a phosphonic acid group if the first diazonium salt does not, and which is free from phosphonic acid groups if the first diazonium salt contains a phosphonic acid group. The dyestuffs of Formula (I) give blue, blue-green, red and black hues with natural and synthetic polyamides, e.g. wool, silk, and nylon and natural and regenerated cellulose, e.g. cotton, linen and viscose rayon optionally admixed with a polyester.
