Abstract

1498793 Detecting record presence and size STRATHEARN AUDIO Ltd 4 Dec 1974 [4 Dec 1973 2 July 1974 (2)] 56188/73 29281/74 and 29282/74 Heading G5R In a record player the presence of a record on a turntable and its size are determined by a photo-electric detector arrangement. Light can be directed via apertures A, B and C in turntable 18 to detectors below the turntable and the record size determined by which of the apertures are closed by the record to the passage of light. Alternatively a light source can be associated with each aperture and positioned below the turntable and the light from the source is directed such that it is reflected by the underside of a record blocking an aperture to a corresponding light detector also below the turntable. In a second arrangement a flat beam of light 33 from an elongated source A is directed parallel to and slightly above the turntable 30 surface to an elongated light detector 34. The amount of the beam width which is blocked and hence the output signal of the detector depends on the record size. In further arrangements the light source can be above and to one side of the turntable and the light is directed by prisms or reflecting elements through apertures in the turntable. Alternatively the apertures can be internally reflecting or carry light guides. The record on the turntable can actuate one or more flaps to close apertures in the turntable and direct light from a source via the reflecting underside of the flap to a photo cell. The light sources can be modulated or coloured or a further detector responsive only to ambient light can be provided to offset the effect of such light on the main detectors.
