Abstract

1498407 Measuring displacement electrically DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 6 May 1975 [4 June 1974] 24798/74 Heading G1N The clearance between the tip of a blade of a compressor or turbine and a casing is monitored by means of a capacitive probe 1 forming part of the frequency determining circuit of an oscillator 2. Probe 1 includes a pair of spaced electrodes 3, 4 insulatingly 5 mounted in a screen 6 so that as a blade passes the electrodes the capacitance therebetween is changed in dependance on the clearance between the electrodes and the blade, causing the FET oscillator 2 frequency to deviate by an amount inversely proportional to the clearance. The frequency deviations are detected by means of a mixer 7 and frequency discriminator 9, the output of which is a series of pulses the amplitudes of which are inversely proportional to the clearances and which are fed to an oscilloscope 10 and a display 12 via a peak detector 11.
