Abstract
1498144 Resin coated metal substrates AMCHEM PRODUCTS INC 9 Sept 1975 [9 Sept 1974] 36949/75 Heading B2E An uncured auto deposited coating on a metal surface, e.g. steel panels, is treated with a coalescing agent after it has been formed. Suitable coalescing agents include ethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, acetoxylacetone, butyl lactate, isopropyl lactate, ethyl lactate, ethyl acetoacetate, diethylene glycol ethyl ether, 2-ethoxyethenol, 2-butoxy ethanol, diethylene glycol monobutyl ether, dipropylene glycol methyl ether, dipropylene glycol ethyl ether, tripropylene glycol methyl ether, acetonyl, methenol ethyl ether, 2-ethoxy ethyl acetate, diethylene glycol monobutyl 'ethyl acetate. Suitable resins include styrene/butadiene copolymer, acrylic polymers, polyacrylonitrile, polyethylene and ethylene vinyl acetate cbpolymers. The coating composition may include acids, e.g. sulphuric, hydrochloric, hydrofluoric, nitric, phosphoric; acetic, chloroacetic and trichloroacetic. It may also include oxidising agents, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, dichromates, nitrites, chlorates, permanganate, persulphates and perborates. The coalescing agent may be present in an aqueous rinse composition at a concentration of at least 10 g/litre, e.g. 20-100 g/litre, preferably 20-30 g/litre. The contact time of the coalescing agent with the coating may be 30 seconds to 5 minutes. Treatment may be by immersion or mist spraying. Other rinses may be employed before or in conjunction with the coalescing agent. The corrosion resistance of the coatings may be improved by treating with an aqueous rinse containing hexavalent chromium or partially reduced chromic acid, e.g. with formaldehyde water rinses may be employed before treatment with the coalescing agent.
