Abstract
1497932 Aluminium oxide UOP Inc 27 March 1975 [29 March 1974] 12851/75 Heading C1A [Also in Division B1] Extruded catalyst particles of increased macropore volume are made by (i) blending a powdered refractory inorganic oxide with a binder-lubricant: (ii) adding a peptizing agent and a water-soluble surfactant to the blend; (iii) extruding the resulting dough; and (iv) drying and calcining the extruded product. Alumina, especially alpha-alumina monohydrate, is the preferred refractory inorganic oxide; others mentioned include silica, zirconia, thoria and boria, as well as composites thereof, e.g. alumina-silica and alumina-zirconia. Specified binder-lubricants include starch, polyvinyl alcohol, methyl cellulose, graphite and micro-polyethylene; 0À01 to 5% may be used, based on the weight of oxide. Peptizing agents mentioned include water and weak organic acids, e.g. formic, acetic and propionic; anionic, cationic and non-ionic surfactants may be used, suitably in a proportion of 0ÀI to 10% based on the weight of oxide. The dough may also contain a crystalline aluminosilicate and a hydrorefining catalytic component or its precursor, especially a Group VIb or Group VIII metal, e.g. molybdenum or nickel. Calcination may be effected at 350‹ to 850‹ C. In the example, a powdered alpha-alumina monohydrate is blended with methyl cellulose, water, and a linear primary alcohol polyether surfactant. The mixture is mulled and extruded, dried and calcined at 650‹ C. to obtain extruded catalyst particles of 1/32 to 1/8 inch diameter of average pore diameter 130Š.
