Abstract
1497801 Measuring fluid-flow ROSEMOUNT ENG CO Ltd 31 Jan 1975 [4 Feb 1974] 05092/74 Heading G1R [Also in Division G3] A rotor, e.g. of fluid-flow responsive apparatus, is supported by an electromagnetic bearing energized in response to any deviation of the rotor from a desired position, as detected by a Hall device which is energized with a current proportional to that which energizes the electromagnet. As shown the apparatus is an anemometer and has upper and lower stationary "pot shaped" electromagnets 21, 14 which co-operate with ferromagnetic elements 27, 30 having concentric annular poles. These elements may be permanent magnets and their poles are of different diameter to those of the stationary magnets, as shown, to provide lateral stability. The bearings are in opposition, i.e. the upper bearing supports the rotor and the pull of the lower bearing. An eddy current brake is provided, comprising a copper disc 35 attached to the rotor and stationary electromagnets 36. The disc has holes near its periphery through which light is directed on to a photo-cell, the resultant pulses being integrated to give an analogue speed signal and also to energize the brake so as to maintain the speed substantially constant. This energizing current is a measure of the driving force on the rotor, i.e. the fluid-flow which the device measures, and is displayed on an ammeter Fig. 3, (not shown). Two alternative embodiments are described, in which the axis of the rotor is horizontal. Fig. 8 shows the arrangement whereby the electromagnet coil 115 is energized according to the difference between the output of high gain amplifier 114 and a reference 118 which represents the desired value of the gap. 114 compares the output of the Hall device with the current in 115 and energizes the device via 116.
