Abstract
1497694 Aluminizing mixture ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd 28 Oct 1976 [28 Oct 1975] 44419/75 Heading C7F A pack aluminizing mixture comprises 1À5-7 wt. per cent Al particles, 0À3-1 wt. per cent ammonium halide (preferably NH4CL), 0À3-1 wt. per cent aluminium halide (preferably AlF), and the balance Al 2 O 3 particles and impurities. The Al and Al 2 O 3 particles may be up to 75Á in diameter, and the surface to be treated may be heated in contact with the mixture in an inert or reducing atmosphere at 750-1100‹C for 1-8 hrs. In the Examples, a Nibase superalloy turbine blade having small cooling holes (of 0À03 inch diameter) is blasted with Al 2 O 3 particles, the holes are filled with the mixture, held in place by a temporary binder, e.g. gum tragacanth, and the blade is embedded in the mixture and heated in argon at 1100‹C for 1À5 hrs. (Ex 1) or 750‹C for 5 hrs. (Ex 2). The mixture may also be used to aluminize Co alloys.
