Abstract

1497639 Paper coating composition RHONEPOULENC INDUSTRIES 27 April 1976 [29 April 1975] 17103/76 Heading C3P An aqueous composition for coating papers and cardboard for printing contains a pigment and a latex of a carboxylated butadiene-styrene copolymer consisting of 30-45% by weight of butadiene, 45-65% by weight of styrene and 2-10% by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, in which the copolymer has an extraction residue of 70-80% and a swelling index of 20-25%. The "extraction residue" is defined as the percentage by weight of copolymer that is insoluble in chloroform under the conditions of a specified procedure and the "swelling index" is defined as the ratio, expressed as a percentage, of the weight of chloroform retained by the specimen to that of the insoluble portion of the specimen. The carboxylic acid may be acrylic, methacrylic, itaconic or fumaric acid. The degree of crosslinking depends essentially on the nature of the chain-limiting agent used to prepare the copolymer and suitable chain-limiting agents are carbon tetrachloride, bromoform or dodecylthiols. The pigment is preferably kaolin.
