Abstract

1496784 Accelerometers BENDIX WESTINGHOUSE Ltd 28 Feb 1975 [14 March 1974] 11527/74 Heading G1K An accelerometer comprises a housing 5 rotatably mounted on a support 1 and formed by inner, intermediate, and outer body parts 6, 22, 7, the intermediate part 22 defining with the outer part 7 a helical passage 8 coaxial with the axis of rotation of the housing, the helical passage 8 being filled with hydraulic fluid and having its ends connected to respective chambers 11, 14 on opposite sides of a diaphragm 10, angular acceleration or deceleration of the housing causing a pressure difference between the ends of the helical passage 8, and the resultant movement of the diaphragm 10 being transmitted by push rods 17, 18 to the exterior of the accelerometer. The accelerometer is intended for use in a vehicle to detect wheel skidding while braking, the support 1 being mounted by a flange 2 on a part of the vehicle structure, while the housing 5 is drivingly connected to a wheel or axle by a boss 21 on the part 7. A spring 19 urges the rod 18 towards the diaphragm 10. The hydraulic connections are arranged so that when deceleration of the wheel occurs, the pressure in chamber 11 is higher than that in chamber 14, and the diaphragm areas and spring 19 force are such that when the deceleration exceeds a pre-set level, indicating skidding, the rod 18 is moved to pass a signal to a modulator valve of the vehicle braking system. A greater area of the diaphragm is exposed to the chamber 11 once the diaphragm has moved out of contact with an annular seating 23.
