1496655 Tumble dryers TI DOMESTIC APPLIANCES Ltd 16 Dec 1974 [21 Dec 1973] 59656/73 Heading F4G A tumble dryer has a casing 2 housing a drying drum 7 which is open at one end, the opening being in line with a loading port of the casing 2. The drum 7 is supported for rotation about its longitudinal axis which is substantially horizontal in a rear bearing and on a front bearing which comprises one or more bearing surfaces supporting the open end of the drum 7, the surface or surfaces lying within an arc subtending an angle at the axis of the drum 7 of about 180 degrees, e.g. 190 degrees. An air seal 30 is provided for limiting air leakage from the drum 7 into the casing 2, the air seal 30 extending round at least that part of the open end of the drum 7 not occupied by the bearing surface or surfaces and being so arranged that the seal does not provide, at least over that part of the periphery not within the confines of the arc, a surface from which the open end of the drum 7 can, in use, rebound. As described the front bearing comprises three pads 27 mounted on a concave surface 24. The seal 30 is mounted on an inturned flange 29 of the casing 2. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the seal overlies the flange (9) of the drum and at the front bearing it is interposed between the bearing and the flange (9). The invention is applied to a tumble dryer of the type disclosed in Specification 1,226,951.
