Abstract
1496152 Seaming LUCAS BATTERIES Ltd 24 April 1975 [18 April 1974] 16899/74 Heading B5K [Also in Division H1] Apparatus for use in the manufacture of electric storage batteries (Figs. 1-5, not shown) comprises die parts 37, 41 for receiving a thermoplastic battery box 11 and a thermoplastic battery lid 25, suction means (Figs. 7 and 9, not shown) operable by compressed gas for causing part 37 to retain the lid, gas from the same source also serving to control operation of means 42, Fig. 8, for retaining the box in the required orientation relative to the lid, means for moving the die parts between a separated position and a position wherein the lid is accurately positioned on the box, and a heater 45 movable between an inoperative position and an operative position in which the lid and the box can be moved into contact therewith to enable the lid to be welded to the box. The sequence of operation, from the removal of a box and lid from a conveyer belt to the replacement thereon of a box with its lid welded thereto, are shown in Figs. 13A-13G. Means 42 is a pivotable stop which is caused to engage a recess 24 at the bottom of box 11 when the box is raised from the conveyer belt on die part 41 by means of gas from the abovementioned source. The suction means comprises suction pads (61) connected by a passage (59) to a Venturi passage (51) through which flows compressed air. Heater 45 (Figs. 10-12, not shown) contains upstanding portions (47) on its surface which fit into the lid 11; these portions taper inwardly from the topmost edge of portion (47) away from the edge (26) of the lid. The lid and box may be made of polypropylene.
