Abstract
1496066 Testing water cooled cable for leaks FEL TEN & GUILLEAUME CARLSWERK AG 14 Jan 1975 [1 Feb 1974 2 Aug 1974 (2)] 1560/75 Heading G1S [Also in Division H1] A water cooled high voltage cable comprises a corrosion-resistant stainless steel coolant tube 1. In a first embodiment Fig. 1, the cable comprises a conductor arrangement formed by a tube 3 and a layer of trapezoidal section wires 4, a smoothing layer 6, oil paper insulation 5, electrical sheilding 7, an aluminium corrugated tube 8, plastics material 9 and PVC sheeting 10. In a second embodiment Fig. 3 (not shown) the conductor arrangement is formed by three inner layers of wires, a tube, and one outer layer of wires. The conductors may be of aluminium or copper. Channels 12 in the first embodiment, and spaces between the inner wires in the second are used to locate leaks in the coolant tube by detecting the time at which leakage occurs on passing a scraper down said coolant tube. At welding joints in the cable, small tubes are inserted Fig. 2 (not shown) to provide communication along said channels, or spaces between wires, across the weld.
