Abstract

1495598 Tanning with oligourethanes BAYER AG 2 April 1975 [4 April 1974 31 Jan 1975] 13397/75 Heading C6C [Also in Division C3] Hide or leather is tanned or retanned by treating the hide or leather with an aqueous liquor comprising at least one hydrophilic oligourethane (i.e. containing ionic groups and/or ethylene oxide residues) preferably water-soluble, having a molecular weight of from 300 to 20,000, the oligourethane having been prepared by the reaction of a polyisocyanate and a polyhydroxyl compound, optionally in the presence of a monofunctional chain-terminating agent other than hydroxy ethyl carbamate. The aqueous liquor may comprise at least one methyholated oligourethane. The oligourethane may contain at least one of the following groups: and wherein R represents alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl. The oligourethane-containing aqueous liquor may be in the form of an aqueous dispersion having an average particle size of less than 200 mÁ. The aqueous liquor may also comprise formaldehyde or a substance from which formaldehyde may be split off. After tanning the leather may be dubbed with a mixture containing water, sulphonated sperm oil, sulphonated chloroparaffin and sulphonated neat's foot oil.
