Abstract
1495568 Controlling light; electronic watches SUWA SEIKOSHA KK 7 April 1975 [8 April 1974] 14178/75 Headings G2F and G3T An electronic wristwatch comprises an oscillator, e.g. of quartz crystal, and dividing and drive circuitry connected to a display using spaced electrodes with material therebetween which undergoes a persistent but reversible oxidation-reduction reaction when excited. The display material may be a viologen dyestuff, hydroquinone, 26-dibromophenol, or a compound undergoing the reaction: Alternatively it may be an inorganic material such as molybdenum trioxide, tungsten dioxide, niobium oxide or titanium dioxide. If a mixture of dyestuffs is used, different colours may be obtained by applying different voltages. The watch described has a four-digit display and different colours may thus be used for the hours and the minutes. Alternatively if the same digits are used to provide a seconds and date display, a different colour may then be used to distinguish from an hours and minutes display.
