Abstract
1495314 Oil-water separator HYDRONAUTICS INC 6 May 1975 [6 May 1974] 19046/75 Heading BID An oil-water separator comprises a housing divided by a coalescing element 26 of polyurethane foam which is located between a fixed perforate wall 28 and a perforate wall 30 which is periodically advanced by ram 32 to squeeze accumulated oil out of element 26, the outer periphery of element 26 being enclosed by an impervious flexible sleeve 40, which is releasably sealed to plates 28, 30 (Fig. 2, not shown). Element 26 may comprise a plurality of chips or pads but is preferably a single block with 30-100 pores per linear inch and is bonded to sleeve 40. The block is compressed radially by sleeve 40 and by the oil-water mixture which fills annular space (50) between sleeve 40 and wall 42. Thus friction between sleeve 40 and wall 42 is avoided when the element 26 is squeezed (Fig. 3, not shown). Outlet chamber 24 contains a baffle 39 which directs coalesced oil upwards to outlet 14. An oil discharge pump connected to outlet 14 may be controlled by electric probes 41, 43, 45 which monitor the oil-water interface in chamber 24. Plate 30 could have valves to prevent oil being displaced back into chamber 22 when element 26 is squeezed, but as shown oil is squeezed into both chambers 22, 24. Water may then be recycled by pump 59 to both chambers to displace the oil towards outlets 14 and 14', the inflow of oilwater mixture being suspended during squeezing. Chamber 24 could be remote from housing 10 and connected thereto by piping.
