Abstract

1495261 Motor vehicles D B FOSTER 7 Jan 1975 [7 Jan 1974 7 Aug 1974] 00600/74 and 34901/74 Headings B7H and B7B In a motor vehicle designed to have a low fuel consumption, the energy losses due to rolling resistance, air drag and engine/drive friction respectively are arranged to have substantially equal values, preferably of not more than 1À5 HP, at a cruising speed in the range 30-40 m.p.h., preferably 35 m.p.h. The vehicle may have an unladen weight of 900 lbs. and an air drag coefficient of 0-25, and may be powered by a petrol engine with a capacity of 250 c.c. As shown the vehicle has an ovoid body 1 providing a low drag coefficient, four seats S, and an air spoiler 2 for improving wheel adhesion and road holding. Two engines are provided, an engine 8 of 100 c.c. being used alone for steady speed operation, and a larger engine 9 catering for acceleration and hill climbing. The engines 8, 9 are coupled either separately or together through change-over means 10a, 10b to a gear-box 11 which drives the rear wheels 4 of the vehicle through a drive shaft 6 and differential gearing 7. An electric motor 12 supplied by a battery 13 is used to start the engines 8, 9 and, can be used separately from or in addition to the engines 8, 9 to drive the vehicle. Provision may be made for the electric motor 12 to operate as a generator so that the engines 8, 9 can be used to charge the battery 13 and the vehicle can be operated with regenerative braking. A supercharge 15 may be provided for the engines 8, 9, and the rear wheels 4 may incorporate free wheel mechanisms to enable the vehicle to coast under inertia or gravity forces. In another embodiment the engines are arranged transversely of the vehicle and are coupled to the front wheels. The vehicle may be propelled by a diesel engine, a Stirling engine or a steam engine.
