Abstract

2-Aryl-2H-benzotriazoles of the formula I <IMAGE> are prepared by hydrogenating a suitable o-nitroazobenzene with hydrogen in the form of a mixture with an amine or ammonia in an amount of at least 0.1 mol per mol of o-nitroazobenzene, at 20 to 100 DEG C and 1 to 66 atmospheres, in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst made with a noble metal from the Group VIII of the Periodic Table or an oxide thereof. The individual symbols are given in Claim 1. The compounds can be used as UV absorbers. The process is environmentally friendly and gives high yields.
