1494773 o-Hydroxyphenylalkanoic acids; lactones SANDOZ Ltd 3 Feb 1975 [5 Feb 1974 11 April 1974 (2) 6 Dec 1974 (2)] 4515/75 Heading C2C The invention comprises the compounds of formulae wherein R 1 is C 1-10 alkyl, C 3-8 cycloalkyl or Ph, and R 2 is H or C 1-4 alkyl (provided that when R 2 is H, then R 1 is not Me); a process for making (I) by lactonizing (II); and a process for making (II) by (a) splitting the corresponding phenolic ether, or (b) irradiating the phenoxyalkanoic acid m-(R 1 )C 6 H 4 OCH(R<SP>1</SP> 2 )CO 2 H (IV) where R<SP>1</SP> 2 is C 1-4 alkyl. Starting materials and intermediates also prepared are the ethyl ester of (IV) (R 1 = cyclohexyl, R 2 <SP>1</SP>= Me); m-MeOC 6 H 4 Ph; and those of formula 2,4-MeO(X)C 6 H 2 Z where X is Me 2 CHCH 2 , Ph, cyclohexyl or cylopentyl and Z is Ac or morpholinothiocarbonylmethyl. Therapeutic compositions having antiinflammatory, oedema-inhibiting, antipyretic, analgesic and blood platelet aggregation-inhibiting activity comprise compounds (I) or (II), including the disclaimed compound (I) but excluding the disclaimed compound (II).
