Abstract

1494552 Control of printers SPERRY RAND CORP 15 Jan 1975 [16 Jan 1974] 1658/75 Heading G4H The typecarrier of a printer contains coded identifying marks which are read and compared with the code corresponding to a desired type carrier. As described, an on-the-fly printer uses interchangeable type bands 38 containing sync. marks 44 and marks 436 ... 43a adjacent the first ten characters on each band; the first and tenth marks are always "1" and the other eight provide an identifying binary code. The code marks are sensed 41 (magnetically or optically) and entered in a register 63 with the aid of the sync marks; a gate 64 receives the first and tenth bits when the band is in its initial position and causes the code to be entered in register 65. The contents of register 65 and of a register 67 containing the code of the desired band (transmitted from a CPU or a tape unit) are compared 66 to produce a signal 66a which, in the event of a mismatch, inhibits printing and sends an "intervention status bit" to the CPU or causes a lamp on a console to be lit. A description (Figs. 1, 2, 4, 6, not shown) is also provided of a conventional printer which is slightly modified for the purposes of the invention.
