Abstract

1,186,251. Selective printing &c. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. 1 Feb., 1967 [14 Oct., 1966], No. 4845/67. Heading B6F. [Also in Division C4] Alpha-numeric characters are recorded and retrieved by typing the characters in binary coded form using photo-luminescent inks (see Divisions C4-C5) for each bit, each bit containing a different ink and each ink having one or more luminescent components each of which components is a complex of a rare earth metal ion having an atomic number greater than 57 and a figure of merit in excess of 200, whereby the encoded characters are retrieved for data processing by illuminating the binary bits with ultra-violet radiation and detecting the characteristic of luminescence in each bit. In a modification the different inks may be applied as bands or patterns to a sheet of paper and the binary encoding produced by obliterating the unwanted bits by a radiation impermeable ink. The figure of merit is derived by testing the photo-luminescent inks with a special disc containing a " standard luminescer " and comparing the luminescence of the inks and luminescer. Comparison values which are less than 200 exclude the photo-luminescent inks from their application to the recording of the alphanumeric characters.
