Abstract

1494507 Automatic control of web width INSTITUTE FOR INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH & STANDARDS 18 Dec 1974 [28 Dec 1973] 54689/77 Heading B5B [Also in Division G3] In a controlled web-handling process, the width of a web is sensed by an array of photoelectric cells connected to a logic circuit. A control device responds to the output of the logic circuit by adjusting a parameter of the process so as to eliminate sensed variations in the width of the web. As shown, a double thickness web 12 of polyethylene film is formed from a blown tube 10 produced by an extruder. The web is fed between roller pairs 16, 17 past two multi-channel photoheads 13, 14 arranged symmetrically across each edge of the web 12. A digital logic circuit 18 receives inputs from the twelve photocells 15 which make up the heads 13, 14, and if more than six of the photo-cells are covered by the web 12, a signal is supplied through a timer 19 to an amplifier 25 which energizes an exhaust valve 27 connected to the extruder so as to decrease the width of the web 12. The timer 19 continues to produce an output as long as an overwidth signal is received from the circuit 18, until a limit time is reached, when its output is inhibited for a further preset time by a timer 20, so as to allow time for web of reduced width to reach the photo-heads 13, 14. A similar correction procedure is carried out by timers 21, 22, amplifier 24 and air pressure valve 26 in response to signals from the circuit 18 indicating that fewer than six of the photo-cells 15 are covered by the web, in order to increase the web width. An alarm device 23 is energized by the circuit 18 if either of the innermost photocells 15b is uncovered or if either of the outermost photo-cells 15a is covered by the web. Corrections may alternatively be effected by adjusting the web speed.
