Abstract

1494397 Reducing Ni ores SHERRITT GORDON MINES Ltd 25 Feb 1975 [4 March 1974] 7874/75 Heading C7D Nickeliferous lateritic and garnieritic ores (including serpentine and limonite ores) containing in excess of 5 wt per cent of Mg are reduced to a crude metallic state comprising Ni and Co by roasting the particulate ore with an inorganic chlorine compound in the presence of a gas stream containing H 2 at 1250‹ to 1600‹F. Suitable compounds include, iron chloride, alkali metal chloride e.g. NaCl, KCl, alkaline earth metal chloride, e.g. CaCl 2 and MgCl 2 . The ore and compound may be pre-mixed or mixed in the furnace which may be of the shaft, multiple hearth, rotary kiln or fluidized bed variety. The compound is added to give a total chlorine content of 0À5-10 wt per cent. The crude metal produced is further treated by a conventional leaching process to produce the desired metals.
