Abstract

1494209 Silica gel ZIRCONAL PROCESSES Ltd 12 Nov 1975 [26 Nov 1974] 51224/74 Headings C1A and C1J [Also in Division C3] Organic silicates may be hydrolysed by contacting them with water under neutral conditions in the presence of an organotin compound wherein n is 1,2 or 3, R is alkyl or aryl, and X is an alkoxy, carboxylate or R 3 SnO- group. The product may be mixed with a refractory powder and shaped-for this use dibutyltin dilaurate or diacetate is preferred-or mixed with zinc dust to give a paint-for this bis(tributyltin)oxide is preferred, alone or with dibutyltin dialaurate. In examples 'Ethyl Silicate 40' or propyl or isopropyl orthosilicate is mixed with approximately 2-42 vol. per cent of bis(tripropyltin) or (tributyltin)oxide, or dibutyltin dilaurate or diacetate, 0-70 vol. per cent of water and 10, 20 or 150 vol. per cent of aqueous ethanol, based on the volume of silicate. The products are mixed with the aluminosilicate Molochite (2 gm./ml.) to give a slurry, used to build a ceramic shell by the stucco method (Example IX).
