Abstract

1,154,835. Treatment of finely divided materials. MIDLAND SILICONES Ltd. 13 March, 1967 [4 March, 1966], No. 9629/66. Headings C1A and C1N. Finely divided materials, such as kaolin, diatomaceous earth, TiO 2 and Ca00 3 are treated, typically to render them hydrophobic, by (1) forming a coating on the discrete particles which is a partial condensate of the hydrolysis product of one or more silanes of formula R n SiX 4-n , where X is a halogen atom or hydrolysable alkoxy radical, R is a monovalent hydrocarbon, or substituted hydrocarbon, radical and n is 0 or 1; then (2) reacting said coated particles with a silane containing at least one Si-bonded atom or radical capable of reaction with the Si-bonded hydroxy radicals present in the first coating. In the example powdered CaCO 3 , from which water had been removed using a Dean & Stark apparatus, and refluxed with SiCi 4 . After the removal of excess SiCl 4 the powder was treated in a tumbler first with moist air to hydrolyse the SiCi 4 to SiO 2 and then with Si(CH 3 ) 3 Cl in N 2 for 5 hours. The hydrophobic effect was tested by exposing the powder to glacial acetic acid solutions and observing the evolution of C0 2 .
