Abstract

Finely divided hydrated silica containing at least 90 per cent silica on a water-free basis and bound water in an amount corresponding to the formula H2O (SiO2)x where x is 3-85 and having a surface area of 50-200 sq. m./grm. and an average ultimate particle size below 0.1 micron is treated with 0.25-15 per cent of an unsaturated silanol or compound which can be hydrolysed to an unsaturated silanol. The silica treated may be prepared as described in Specifications 745,822, 745,890, 756,857, 756,875, 756,877. The silanol may contain an unsaturated alkenyl or alkinyl hydrocarbon or a halogenated hydrocarbon radical containing up to 8 carbon atoms, e.g. vinyl, allyl, crotyl proparyl, cyclohexenyl and butadienyl. Silanols specified are triphenyl silanol and diphenyl silane diol. Hydrolyzable silanes specified are halosilanes, e.g. allyl trichlorosilane, diallyl dichlorosilane, vinyltrichlorosilane and the corresponding products in which the hydrocarbon radical is phenyl, vinyl phenyl, vinyl phenyl ethyl, methallyl, crotyl, 2-chloroallyl, propargyl and butadienyl; alkoxy silanes e.g. diallyl diethoxy silane, allyl triethoxy silane, phenyl triethoxy silane, alkyl triphenoxy silane and allyl triamyloxy silane; and amino silanes e.g. allyl tris (methyl amino) silane, diallyl diamino silane, triallyl amino silane and dicrotyl diamino silane. Best results are obtained with polymerizable halosilanes. The silica may be treated by tumbling and passing the silanol or silane through entrained in a gas such as nitrogen. Alternatively the silica may be treated with a solution of the silanol or silane in a solvent such as benzene or xylene. Alternatively the silica may be mixed with a relatively large proportion of silanol or silane and then diluted with further silica. The treated silica may be heated to 100-300 DEG C. or washed with water to remove the chloride content.ALSO:A finely divided hydrated silica (see Group III) is treated with 0.25-15 per cent of an unsaturated silanol or compound which p can be hydrolyzed to an unsaturated silanol, and incorporated in rubber before or after treatment. The treating agent is preferably a polymerizable unsaturated halosilane so that covulcanizing with the rubber can be effected. Specifications 745,822, 745,890, 756,857, 756,875 and 756,877 [all in Group III] are referred to.
