Abstract

1493992 Connecting light guides LICENTIA PATENT VERWALTUNGS GmbH 1 May 1975 [10 May 1974] 18259/75 Heading G2J Two fibres are connected by a frusto-conical projection on one fibre 10 mating with a comp- lementary recess in the other fibre 11. The fibres' ends may be inserted in a tube 12 to assist mating. Tube 12 may be glued to one or both fibres. An index-matching oil may be applied to the joint. The fibres may have an overall diameter of 100 Ám and a core region of 4 Ám. The shell region may be pure quartz glass whereas the core region may be quartz glass doped with GeO, P 2 O 5 or Al 2 O 3 . Alternatively, the core may be pure quartz glass and the shell region may be highly doped quartz glass. Alkali silicate glass may also be used. To form the projection, the end of fibre 10 may be immersed in an etchant which acts only on the shell region, while the end of fibre 11 is immersed in an etchant which acts only on the core region. Alternatively, if no such suitable selective etchants can be used, a positively operating photoresist may be applied to the end of fibre 11, the photo-resist is exposed to laser light passing through the fibre, the unexposed photo-resist is removed and a non-selective etchant is used to act on the core region to form a recess. The projection on fibre 10 is made using negatively operating photoresist in an analagous way.
